From Aggery Road to Nomhle Nkonyeni Street: Gqeberha Pays Tribute

Beloved actress Nomhle Nkonyeni would probably be thrilled if she knew that a street in Gqeberha now carries her name. The official unveiling of the street, happening today, is a celebration that took five years to make happen, according to Phumelele Zonela from the Nomhle Nkonyeni Legacy Foundation. Luckily, Nomhle gave her approval for this tribute before she passed away, and the community has been incredibly supportive.

Previously known as Aggery Road in New Brighton, the street is now a nod to the late veteran actress. This is a way of ensuring that Nomhle's legacy lives on, and the community's support has made it even more meaningful.

Nomhle Nkonyeni was cherished for her bold personality, passion for theater and filmmaking, and her outspoken nature. She spent more than four decades doing what she loved, telling stories through her acting. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2019 at the age of 77 due to heart complications.

Nomhle made significant contributions to the world of acting, appearing in notable productions like Jahmil X.T. Qubeka's film, "Sew the Winter to My Skin," and the boxing film, "Knuckle City." Her roles in shows like "Gaz'lam," "Igazi," "Zero Tolerance," "Tsha Tsha," and "Home Affairs" showcased her versatility. In 2019, she was honored with the prestigious Order of Ikhamanga in Silver by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for her "excellence in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism, or sport."
