South African Music Mourns the Loss of Iconic Singer Zahara

Minister Zizi Kodwa sadly confirmed that Zahara, the popular Afro-pop singer whose real name is Bulelwa Mtukutana, has passed away. Zahara, known for her music, died in a public hospital in Johannesburg after being moved from Netcare Olivedale Hospital. She had been admitted just after celebrating her birthday on November 9.

In a brief message on his official X account, Kodwa expressed condolences to Zahara's family, saying, "I am deeply saddened by Zahara's passing. My thoughts go out to the Mtukutana family and the South African music community. The government has been supporting the family during this difficult time. Zahara and her guitar made a significant and lasting impact on South African music."

Other artists also paid tribute to Zahara. Black Coffee shared a photo of the late singer holding her guitar, saying, "You healed so many souls." Lady Zamar acknowledged Zahara's contributions to the music industry, stating, "Zahara did a lot for the music industry in South Africa, paving the way for many others with her iconic presence and guitar. She will be missed. Though I didn't know her personally, her music was powerful and bold. My prayers are with her family."

Concerns and rumors arose surrounding Zahara's health two weeks ago when it was reported that she had been hospitalized. Sources close to her confirmed liver complications, with her family later issuing a statement. According to insiders, Zahara experienced stomach pains after her fiancé, Mpho Xaba, paid lobola for her. The persistent pain led to a hospital stay of about two weeks, initially in the medical ward and later in the ICU when doctors discovered liver damage. After undergoing delicate tests, Zahara slipped into a coma, experiencing lung and kidney issues. She leaves behind her husband, Xaba, and her family, with plans for a wedding in 2024.
